iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max were announced at Apple's 9 September event, go up for pre-order on Saturday 12 September, and reach customers on 18 September.
The design is familiar. Almost everything behind it is not. This is the breakdown of what changed, and which parts of it are worth waiting to verify.
One note before the specifications: every performance and accuracy figure below is Apple's own. Nothing has been independently tested yet, and sustained-performance claims in particular tend to look different in a review unit than on a keynote slide.
Design and colours
The visible change is cohesion — the aluminium frame and the back glass are now colour-matched, so the phone reads as one object rather than a frame wrapped around a differently coloured back.
Four colours: a deep Black, a more refined Silver, a new Glacier, and Burgundy, which is the one Apple spent the most time on.
A20 Pro: two Neural Engines and a rebuilt package
The chip is where the generational jump lives.
Process. A20 Pro is built on 2-nanometre technology, which is what makes the rest of the list possible.
CPU. Six cores — two new high-performance cores Apple says are up to 20% faster and describes as desktop-class, plus four efficiency cores. Every core has neural accelerators attached for low-latency on-device AI.
GPU. A 7-core design that Apple claims is up to 40% faster than the previous generation, which is a large gain for a single year. Apple also cited higher internal bandwidth, micro-architectural work aimed specifically at high-end games, and a new generation of Neural Accelerators with twice the 8-bit floating-point throughput. That last one is the piece that lets third-party large language models run on the device rather than in the cloud.
Neural Engine. There are now two of them, 32 cores in total, which Apple puts at double the AI compute of the previous generation.
Memory. A 50% increase in bandwidth, on the widest memory interface Apple has shipped in an iPhone.
The most interesting engineering is the packaging. Borrowing an approach from the M-series Macs, the silicon die now sits side by side with the memory instead of being stacked with it. That takes the memory out of the chip's thermal path and lets the die connect directly to the cooling system — which matters more than it sounds, for the reason in the next section.
Cooling, and why "sustained" is the important word
Peak performance has not been the constraint on recent iPhones. Holding that performance through a long gaming session or a long export has been.
iPhone 18 Pro answers that with a second-generation vapour chamber that Apple says has roughly three times the surface area of the one in iPhone 17 Pro. De-ionised water circulates through it continuously. The chamber is built from 80% recycled stainless steel and paired with more thermally conductive graphite, plus what Apple described as an industry-first "Nanotwin" copper material that pulls heat away from the display while adding structural strength.
Apple's claim: up to 40% higher sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, and up to twice that of iPhone 16 Pro and older.
This is the number most worth waiting for reviews on. Sustained-performance results depend heavily on ambient temperature and workload, and they are the easiest figures on a keynote slide to reproduce only under ideal conditions.
Battery: the biggest jump Apple has claimed
Apple credits the gains to A20 Pro's efficiency, system-level improvements and new battery designs.
The claims:
- iPhone 18 Pro now delivers the same all-day battery life as last year's Pro Max, despite being the smaller phone.
- iPhone 18 Pro Max has the largest battery-life increase in iPhone history.
- Video playback, eSIM-only models: 36 hours on the Pro, 45 hours on the Pro Max.
- Charging: 50% in around 15 minutes wired. Five minutes gives roughly six hours of video playback.
Apple also introduced a second, more honest metric. Rather than only quoting video playback — which nobody's actual day looks like — it now publishes a figure based on real-world mixed usage: photos, AI features, everything. On that measure it claims 24 hours per charge on the Pro and 30 hours on the Pro Max.
Publishing a realistic number next to the flattering one is a genuinely good change, and other manufacturers should copy it.
The camera: aperture becomes a control again
This is the biggest camera change on iPhone in years.
Variable aperture. The 48MP Fusion Main camera can now physically change its aperture. Apple built it from six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair, made from a specialised polymer composite chosen for the balance of mass, flexibility and durability, driven by a new rotor mechanism, behind a lens designed to hold image quality across the aperture range.
In practice:
- In low light the aperture opens, letting in around 50% more light. Apple showed portraits and astrophotography as the beneficiaries, and said Night mode captures are both faster and cleaner.
- f/1.8 is the aperture Apple optimised as the general-purpose balance between light gathering and depth of field.
- The aperture narrows for more depth of field, which is the fix for the group shot where the back row is soft.
By default it adjusts automatically to the scene. The part that will matter to photographers is that it does not have to.
Pro controls. iPhone 18 Pro adds manual camera controls: white balance, a live histogram for checking exposure across the scene, manual aperture selection across four settings, and manual shutter speed. Slow shutter for deliberate motion blur, fast shutter to freeze a moment — both now possible without a third-party app. The controls work for video too.
Apple showed one detail that gives away how much thought went into the blade design: a portrait where the photographer used a narrow aperture to turn a highlight on an earring into a starburst. The shape of that starburst is a direct consequence of the blade geometry, which is the kind of thing you only get right on purpose.
Smart focus tracking uses on-device models to hold focus on a subject, including through depth changes and when the subject leaves and re-enters the frame.
Camera software
- Cinematic mode from ordinary video. You can now apply the effect after capture, and it supports 60fps, which is what makes the half-speed effect work.
- Time lapse in 4K, in Dolby Vision HDR.
- AudioMix has new algorithms for cleaner voice recording, and now handles music as well as speech.
- Photographic Styles gain texture and grain control — including adjusting skin texture, balancing colour and texture together, and reversing any of it later.
That last one deserves its own section.
Texture and grain control is a bigger deal than it sounds
Grain and texture are how a photograph communicates era and emotion. They are the difference between an image that looks like it was taken and one that looks like it was rendered — and they are the hardest thing to get out of an AI image generator, because "vintage" and "retro" get read as filter names rather than as physical descriptions of a print.
Apple has now put those controls in front of hundreds of millions of people and named them correctly. Grain. Texture. Film.
If you write image prompts, that vocabulary is the lesson: describe the physical behaviour of the medium — how the grain sits, how the contrast flattens, which colours fade first — rather than asking for a mood. Our prompt library and tag index are organised around that kind of specificity.
Proving a photo is real
Two authenticity features shipped together:
- Apple is supporting the SynthID standard for identifying images that were generated or edited with AI.
- Apple Reference Image goes further for photographs. The main camera cryptographically signs the image data at pixel level at the moment of capture. Private Cloud Compute develops that signed data into an unalterable image, which sits in Photos alongside the normal editable version.
Apple's own analogy was a digital negative, and it is a fair one. You keep an untouchable record of what the sensor saw, and edit freely from a separate copy.
For photojournalism this is significant. For everyone else it is the first mainstream implementation of an idea that has been discussed for years: authenticity established at capture, rather than argued about afterwards.
Elsewhere on the phone
- The Dynamic Island is smaller and now shows up to three live activities at once.
- iOS 27 ships with it — Siri AI, the reimagined Image Playground, new Photos editing tools and the rest are covered in our iOS 27 feature list.
- Gaming. Apple demonstrated Monster Hunter Outlanders from Tencent Games and Capcom, running iOS-exclusive Cinematic Graphics at up to 120fps with MetalFX upscaling and Spatial Audio. It arrives later this year.
- Accessories. An updated Clear Case, new colours for Tech Woven and Silicone, matching Crossbody Straps, and a new Wrist Strap that works with both iPhone cases and AirPods Pro.
Apple also mentioned that the keynote itself was shot on the new Pro camera system, using the variable aperture. Take that as marketing, but it is at least a claim that can be checked.

A 2TB option is new this year on both.
In the US, Apple introduced Apple Upgrade, a leasing programme with 12- or 24-month payments and an upgrade path at the end of the term, plus trade-in credit of up to $1,200 for an iPhone 14 or newer. AppleCare One Family also launched in the US, with sign-up from the phone.
Pre-orders open Saturday 12 September. Devices ship 18 September.
Should you upgrade?
Coming from iPhone 17 Pro, the honest answer is probably not — unless the variable aperture is something you would genuinely use, in which case it is the first iPhone camera change in years that adds a capability rather than refining one.
Coming from iPhone 16 Pro or older, the combination of doubled sustained performance, a substantially better battery and a camera that can change its aperture is a real generational gap.
Either way, wait for independent testing on the thermal and battery claims. Those are the two numbers Apple leaned on hardest, and they are the two that reviews are best placed to check.
