GTA 6: Release Date, Setting and Everything Confirmed So Far

Grand Theft Auto VI is the most anticipated game release in over a decade, and enough is now confirmed to separate fact from the enormous volume of speculation around it.

Here is what Rockstar has actually said.

The release date is confirmed

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. That places it exactly one week before Black Friday, which is not an accident. It is the strongest retail window of the year, and Rockstar has positioned the biggest launch in the industry directly inside it.

Platforms at launch are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. There is no announced PC version. That will frustrate a lot of people, but it follows Rockstar's established pattern: previous Grand Theft Auto games launched on consoles first and arrived on PC considerably later. Expect the same here, without a date.

The setting: Vice City and the state of Leonida

The game returns to Vice City, the Miami inspired location last seen as the setting of 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This time it sits inside a much larger fictional state called Leonida, a version of modern day Florida made up of several distinct regions.

That expansion beyond a single city is the structural change. Previous entries centred on one metropolitan area with some surrounding countryside. Leonida is designed as a state, with the variety that implies.

Rockstar North co studio head Rob Nelson has indicated the game takes roughly 80 hours to complete.

Jason and Lucia

GTA 6 has two playable protagonists, and Lucia is the first female lead character in a mainline Grand Theft Auto game. That alone makes this a notable entry in the series.

What Rockstar has shared about them:

  • Jason grew up around criminals and grifters, and served in the Army.
  • Lucia comes from Liberty City. Rockstar's own material says that fighting for her family is what led to her imprisonment, and that sheer luck is what got her out.

The premise is straightforward and familiar: an easy score goes wrong, and the two of them end up caught in a conspiracy that runs across Leonida, forced to depend on each other. The pairing has drawn Bonnie and Clyde comparisons, which appears to be entirely deliberate on Rockstar's part.

Trailer 3 was released on April 19, 2026, and gave the fullest look yet at both characters and at how alive Vice City is meant to feel.

Why the whole industry moved out of the way

GTA 6 is not just a big release, it is a scheduling event. Publishers have spent 2026 rearranging their calendars to avoid launching anywhere near it, which is why September and October are unusually crowded with titles that would ordinarily have shipped in November.

The expectation across the industry is that GTA 6 breaks essentially every sales record that exists. Previous entries have sold in the hundreds of millions over their lifetimes, and this one arrives after a longer gap and considerably more anticipation than any of them.

What is still unknown

Plenty, and it is worth being clear about which is which:

  • No PC release date. Not announced, not hinted at.
  • No confirmed price. Widely discussed, not confirmed.
  • Online mode details. Given what GTA Online became, this is commercially the most important unanswered question about the game, and Rockstar has said very little.
  • Whether the date holds. GTA 6 has already been delayed once. November 19 is the current confirmed date, not a guarantee.

The short version

November 19, 2026. PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Vice City inside the wider state of Leonida. Two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, with Lucia the first woman to lead a mainline GTA. Roughly 80 hours of story. No PC version announced.
